Restoring marine habitats and reviving marine biodiversity.
ReefCircular creates artificial reefs to increase marine biodiversity, and the many benefits healthy marine ecosystems provide, in areas damaged by human activity.
Why do we need artificial reefs?
At ReefCircular, we design artificial reefs for specific ecosystems and species to maximise biodiversity. Our artificial reefs provide a surface for species like seaweed and mussels to attach to, shelter for small species, e.g. fish and crabs, and a feeding ground for species of all sizes. In a pilot project in Denmark, we saw a 400% increase in marine biodiversity at sites with our reefs compared to a site without our reefs.
How do we increase marine biodiversity?
Marine biodiversity is declining rapidly, e.g. 85% of oyster reefs have disappeared globally. One of the major contributors to this decline is habitat loss resulting from activities such as coastal urbanisation, overfishing, and destructive fishing practices. As marine biodiversity decreases, so do the benefits healthy marine ecosystems provide society, e.g. food, coastal protection, and employment opportunities
